They just caught the guy, alive. Apparently they entered the house and used dogs to sniff him out. He was hiding under a bed, they tazed him, and brought him into custody. He apparently did not have a gun, but had a knife, and was covered with a number of superficial, self-inflicted knife wounds.

It sounds like the story isn't as bad as I had heard:

Austin Police have surrounded a house in North Austin they believe contains a burglary suspect. According to police the man barricaded himself inside the home and may have a weapon. He is believed to be a felon and by himself inside the home.

Police originally arrived on scene after responding to a call about a burglary in progress.

Which still isn't great, but at least there aren't any innocent people being held hostage. Also, I have now been interviewed by four different news stations, in which I offer a variety of useless observations ("durr, there's a lotta cars.")

This is what I looked out and saw this morning:







... Right across the street. All of the white cars are cop cars. A lot more cops have shown up since then. A lot more swat vehicles have shown up since then.

Apparently a guy down the street is holding his family hostage. There have been shots fired. That's all anyone seems to know at the moment. I'm not worried about us: it's about a block down, and there are a lot of cops around the house.

The situation is both exciting and very sad.
